“Ready to go, honey?” “Yeah, let’s do this.”
My wife and I have been avid Bobby Kennedy supporters and campaign volunteers for over a year. It’s been an exhilarating ride, filled with great stories and wonderful memories we will cherish for the rest of our lives. But now, a major crossroads has been reached. RFK Jr. made the shocking announcement heard ‘round the world that he will be endorsing Donald Trump, forming an alliance with his adversary.
I am intimately aware of the Massachusetts Kennedy movement and know many are questioning the implications and what this means for Bobby’s campaign moving forward. As someone who does not like to stand still, I’ve decided the best course of action is to follow Bobby’s action and embrace the opportunity.
Yesterday morning, my wife and I drove and then road our bikes (there is no vehicle traffic over this peculiar overpass) to our favorite spot we’ve been doing highway banner drops promoting RFK Jr. for months, only this time we brought along another item….a Trump banner.
Over a major I-95 overpass, we dropped our Kennedy and Trump banners side-by-side, while waving to drivers and passengers, with my American flag in hand. Immediately and throughout our time, we were greeted by a barrage of positive horn honks and waves, but also experienced the greatest number of middle fingers we’ve ever seen. Clearly, we struck a serious nerve with establishment types. Good, that is very, very good. Living in the bluest of blue states, we know very well what makes modern liberals tick and my wife and I know how to handle ourselves as independents in a seemingly endless sea of groupthink.

Still, the positive vibes greatly outweighed the fear-driven negative drivers. This alliance is going to completely change the game and for the better no doubt.
A nice, soft-spoken older woman who was clearly a staunch Democratic, mustered up the courage to approach us and start a conversation. She had told us she initially had walked by and was fearful to approach us, but curiosity got the better of her and she decided to approach us the second time around. She wanted to know how Bobby Kennedy supporters could possibly promote someone like Donald Trump.
We put it all out there for her. We told her about the groundswell of activism that Bobby had inspired the past year, only to be faced by constant attacks, games, and illegal maneuvers from the DNC and hard-core DNC backers. We told her it was all coming from the DNC side and that we had first-hand experience of being tolerated by the Republican side but not the Democrat side. We told her that the DNC was doing everything in their power to have only one candidate on the ballot in November, their own candidate who was simply handed the nomination and that it was a funny way of trying to “save democracy.” We went into policy reasons, such as ending forever wars, fighting censorship, and being big believers in Bobby’s real version of environmentalism that focuses on things such as our personal health, the quality of our soil, toxic chemicals, etc., as opposed to the top-down controlling type of carbon-focused corporate environmentalism. On and on we went. She was clearly intrigued as she stayed and listened to us, with the big takeaway from her being that she didn’t know any of these things and now she understood. As she said, you guys wanted a voice and the DNC was taking that away. The moment was powerful on multiple levels, as she saw we were just regular people concerned about our children’s future and that she was being shielded from much information via her usual news sources and circle of friends and associates.
And that is the thing. When it was just Donald Trump, so many “nice” liberal types could easily categorize it all as just a basket full of deplorables that should be mocked, vilified, and ignored for as long as it takes. With RFK Jr. and his movement now joining forces with MAGA, liberal America is being forced to consider what the hell is going on. Many of us in deep blue states such as Massachusetts have been pleading with the Democrats and the establishment to at least take some ownership for the situation we are in as a nation. It has fully fallen on deaf ears up to this point. If there is one characteristic that defines modern times, it is to never take ownership for anything, as it is always someone else’s fault. I think it finally clicked for the nice, soft-spoken status quo supporting lady that spoke with me and my wife that maybe, just maybe her party has something to do with driving people like us away and causing some of the problems we are in. Really, though, I don’t care either way anymore. Dedicated people in the RFK Jr. movement are now driving the political discourse in our country via positive, forward-looking action, as opposed to empty words. At this point, if the Democratic establishment finally looks in the mirror, the better for our country I suppose, but it is much too late. They will continue to slip into oblivion.
Bobby Kennedy’s game changing and bold move to work with Donald Trump and the deep meaning and implications about it reminded me about a story I told and wrote about via my underground newsletter I focused on during the heart of the COVID years, as I believe there are a lot of parallels. I titled the article “Beaver Tales.”
In the summer of 2021, I wrote: It is amazing what the slightest change in perspective can do for your understanding of where you are and how to navigate a difficult and sometimes seemingly impossible situation. There is a tract of land centered on the Powow River that is one of the very last completely wild and untamed parts of Amesbury. It is from the Newton Road bridge near the Water Treatment plant to the Woodsom Farm swimming hole for dogs. This is a black diamond stretch of the river; not for beginners and not for those afraid of getting their noses and kayaks dirty.
Sometimes you need to get further away from civilization. Often times, designated “open space” is not nearly good enough, and is often littered with unpleasantries such as dog crap and face masks which seem to be found as often as the aforementioned. Trash seems to be everywhere these days, but I digress.
This stretch of river has some impossibly narrow channels; sharp turns; beaver damns; several hazardous offramps that lead to dead ends, confusion, and bewilderment; and an endless series of downed trees completely blocking the main artery.
In the middle you feel like you could be in Northern Maine away from everything, instead of a short walk to homes and businesses. There are breathtaking sites and moments. There is nothing quite like seeing a heron flying a few feet in front of your face down the river, as was the case one particular time. I turned a sharp corner and saw it take flight almost on top of me, taking my breath away. That amazing moment will be etched in my mind forever.
It’s lovely to see playful beavers swimming and poking in and out of the river beside you. It is also incredible getting a close view of a beaver damn, gaining a true appreciation for these amazingly skilled civil engineers of nature.
The beavers and trees defeated me the first time I attempted this ride. Never being through this stretch, I underestimated the challenge. Coming from the Farm side, my goal was to reach the Newton Road bridge, which seemed simple enough and not that long. After about the fourth time balancing on yet another tree in the middle of the river and hitting multiple dead ends, it was time for a new plan and vantage point. In short, I had become too tunnel visioned and missed the tiny clues that would have allowed for a still tough but clearer passage.
Mother nature has an amazing ability to quickly slap you around and put you in your place when you let your guard down and your ego gets over inflated. Yet nature also reminds us of what is possible, and the importance of keeping your long-term vision on the forest and not the individual trees. When lost in the thicket of the wild, moving over by just a couple of feet can give you a totally different perspective that helps you find your way.
In the human world, as with parts of the Powwow River, things are clogged up by various impediments. Things are certainly not running fluidly right now. Still, it is all a matter of perspective. The impediments are just challenges that can be overcome. Some are actually blessings in disguise that can be used to our advantage. Take for example the beaver damn. It completely disrupts the smooth flow of the river, causing water to spill out in every direction. But what is water? Water is energy and the beaver damn that is causing water to spill out over the river’s edges is spreading energy all around, creating fertile soil and a whole new wetland habitat of new life.
Our society is clogged by massive impediments. Absolutely nothing seems to be running smoothly at the moment. Yet, fertile soil is being created outside the edges of the mainstream of society, as energy flows out of the center to a wider variety of individuals. More and more people are getting filled with this energy of life that is being disbursed every which way by the massive clogs in the establishment thinking. Almost without even knowing it, a much wider group of people are becoming activists for the first time. The growing failures of the ruling class is forcing a wider variety of people to look for solutions. Our society will be much better off for it.
Absolutely anything is possible. We just need to break out of our groupthink and tunneled vision view of how things can and must be. At the end of the day, the Democratic and Republican parties are just run by people. Ordinary and flawed people. There are no natural laws that say our politics has to be specifically defined the way it is now.
The wild river of life is unpredictable. What a constant adventure it is trying to get through the various challenges with your vessel. If you arrive at a major roadblock, don’t view it as the end, view it as a challenge to be overcome. Still, you’ll have a much better chance of getting through by attacking from different angles to find the way. If you doggedly stick to it, you may come out wet, scratched, and with a case of poison ivy, but what an amazing and exhilarating ride.
What a beautiful essay, Ted. I love what happened to you and your wife on the overpass, meeting that curious woman. Sometimes it just takes a little curiosity. Unfortunately, so many people are so entrenched in the mainstream media narrative of fear and are too afraid to even ask a question. Kudos to this woman for being brave enough to ask, and to you and your wife for so calmly and nicely discussing the issues. That’s how we need to move forward. Inviting folks to be curious. Having open and honest discussions and really listening to each other. I feel very hopeful!
Very well said Ted!
